Ms. Masters is not a lawyer. This is the best information she has based on twelve years of working with undocumented and low-income students who wanted to go to college. She tries to keep informed about changes as they occur, and she will update her website when she learns anything new. In the end, each person and each family is responsible for making their own decisions about taxes and immigration status. But this is how the college money system works.

Taxes/Impuestos:
In order for students to qualify for ALL financial aid and some scholarships, they must fill out a FAFSA form their senior year in high school and EVERY year that they are in college. Many colleges and universities will ask for additional documentation, but they start with the FAFSA. In order to file a FAFSA, the PARENTS of the student MUST complete and file their taxes. You MUST file your student's junior year and senior year of high school and every year thereafter. It is possible that some programs will ask for tax information from the student's sophomore year, as well. Even if you make very little money you must file, so a record of your income, no matter how small, is officially registered.
What if I am an undocumented parent and have NO social security number?/¿Qué hago en caso que soy padre y no tengo social security number por causa de mi estatus migratorio?
In order to file taxes without a social security number, you can get an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer ID Numbers). It is a kind of substitute for the social security number for tax purposes. https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Individual-Taxpayer-Identification-Number-ITIN.
What if I am an undocumented student and have not started the DACA process?
If you qualify for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) http://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/consideration-deferred-action-childhood-arrivals-daca, and have not yet begun the process, you should get that process started. Some colleges will consider more financial aid and scholarships opportunities if you have DACA status rather than if you simply remain completely undocumented. And there are some schools who will only accept undocumented students if they have DACA status (I don't know how many---but I know there are some from my work on my alumni association admissions committee). Plus, DACA allows you work legally and gives you a temporary social security number, which helps you with so many opportunities.
